Questa presentazione di Yogini Ritual Dance e Yogini of Hirapur Oracle è stata esposta durante l’International Webniar Ayush At The Door, Celebration of Amrit Mahoysav 1 -5 Novembre 2021. Puri,Orissa-India.

È il mio amore e il mio profondo legame con l’Orissa e la sua cultura, che mi hanno ispirato a creare Yogini Danze Rituali e l’opera d’arte Yogini of Hirapur Oracle.

All’inizio degli anni Novanta sono andata per la prima volta in Orissa e ho vissuto a Bhubaneswar per diversi mesi per studiare la danza Odissi.

Dopo questa prima residenza, ho vissuto in Orissa molte altre volte rivolgendo la mia attenzione e i miei studi non solo alla danza Odissi, ma anche ad altri aspetti artistici e culturali dell’Orissa quale lo studio delle sculture femminili in danza che mi fece visitare per la prima volta, tra il 1999 e il 2000, il tempio delle Yogini di Hirapur. Luogo dove, una volta iniziata la ricerca sono poi ritornata diverse volte.

In uno dei miei lunghi soggiorni in Orissa, stavo cercando un nuovo soggetto per il mio nuovo libro quando è piovuta su di me una fortissima ispirazione artistica: scrivere delle Yogini, in particolare del tempio delle Yogini di Hirapur e perché no… ricostruire tutte le sculture delle Yogini disegnandole una per una.

Il richiamo è stato così forte che non ci ho pensato due volte… comunque quando le Yogini ci invitano a fare qualcosa non è assolutamente possibile declinare l’invito!

Quindi, ho accettato l’invito di aprirmi all’ispirazione artistica creativa delle Yogini.

Mentre la ricerca del tempio delle Yogini è stato pubblicato nel libro “La danza segreta delle Yogini. Il tempio di Hirapur” (Venexia, Roma 2014), l’ispirazione artistica di ricostruizione delle sculture delle Yogini, parzialmente o a volte completamente distrutte, mi ha portato a creare un’opera d’arte originale: le carte oracolari Yogini di Hirapur Oracle composto dalle 64 carte delle Yogini, dalla carta di Shiva Bhairava e dalla carta delle Katyayani. Il mazzo composto dunque da 66 carte, comprende anche un libretto in lingua italiana e inglese con la spiegazione di ogni carta oracolare.

La ricostruzione artistica è stata fatta nel pieno rispetto della tradizione, ma allo stesso tempo in piena libertà per realizzare uno strumento artistico assolutamente originale.

Non avrei mai pensato di fare un lavoro artistico importante con il disegno. Dopo aver disegnato 66 tavole delle dimensioni A3+ per due lunghi anni, ho sentito di aver acquisito un’esperienza importante nelle arti visive.

Subito dopo la pubblicazione, le carte Yogini of Hirapur Oracle hanno ricevuto l’interesse di molte donne provenienti da diverse parti del mondo. Questo è il motivo per cui dico sempre che: più che mio, questo è un progetto delle stesse Yogini!

La terza fase di questa ricerca è il progetto Yogini Danza Rituale.

Spiegherò come Yogini, Danza, Rituale e Oracolo si uniscono in questo progetto.

Cos’è la Yogini Danza Rituale?

Le Yogini Danza Rituali possono essere definite come un approccio alla ‘cura’ – in senso generale – e alla conoscenza di sé attraverso l’espressione artistica della danza. Un viaggio attraverso il corpo, il cuore e l’anima risvegliati dai segni e dai simboli delle carte oracolari Yogini of Hirapur Oracle.

Le caratteristiche principali di questo progetto di danza sono:

• l’uso degli Hasta Mudra secondo il sistema delle danze classiche dell’India per gli aspetti estetici e narrativi, ma anche per quelli curativi ed energetici secondo i principi dello yoga
• l’espressione artistica di tutto il corpo
• il processo coreografico corale in cui tutte le partecipanti sono coinvolte nella creazione della danza
• e l’utilizzo delle carte oracolari Yogini of Hirapur Oracle.

La creazione coreografica e le performance di tutto il gruppo durante le sessioni di Yogini Danze Rituali sono parte di un momento rituale collettivo condiviso nel tempo e nello spazio del laboratorio. La coralita’ è un punto assolutamente rilevante delle Yogini Danze Rituali.

L’ aspetto rituale, creativo e trasformativo delle Yogini Danze Rituali emerge, prende forma e viene condiviso nello spazio e nel tempo intimo del laboratorio di danza. In questo modo le partecipanti sono completamente a proprio agio per aprirsi e vivere il rito del cambiamento che la danza porta con sé.

La danza ha il potere di trasformare, rinnovare e ricreare. Questi aspetti legati al rituale sono il modo migliore per segnare un percorso, per fluire nelle profondità del significato e per andare verso un processo di cambiamento.

Yogini Danze Rituali è fondamentalmente un processo di ‘cura’ attraverso l’arte della danza e l’oracolo. Non si può dire se sia la danza a condurre all’oracolo o l’oracolo a manifestare la danza. I due momenti lavorano insieme, scambiandosi e interagendo allo stesso tempo.

Cos’è un oracolo?

L’oracolo è un antico rituale che appartiene a tutte le antiche civiltà ed è ancora praticato in molte culture tradizionali.

Vivo in Kerala e ho l’opportunità di vedere artisti incarnare l’oracolo nei rituali di diverse arti tradizionali. Ma il Kerala e’ solo uno dei tanti esempi che potrei fare.

Le forme delle lingue oracolari sono strettamente legate alla cultura che le esprime. Le Yogini of Hirapur Oracle pertanto, parlano un linguaggio che è contemporaneo. Sebbene le carte oracolari Yogini of Hirapur Oracle siano state ispirate dal tempio di Hirapur, allo stesso tempo se ne distaccano per diventare un oracolo dei nostri giorni. La saggezza delle Yogini torna alla luce ma in un nuovo contesto.

La divinazione è un processo creativo in cui l’ingegno e la potenza, la capacità di fare e la capacità di sentire ci permettono di comunicare con i processi velati dell’universo. Profetesse o profeti, incantatrici e maghi, sibille, streghe ma anche poetesse e poeti – ma includerei tutte le forme artistiche – rientrano in quella categoria in cui l’arte della divinazione, nelle sue varie forme e sistemi, si è sempre annunciata agli esseri umani.

Come lavorano insieme le Yogini, la Danza, il Rituale e l’Oracolo?

La danza è spesso fare poesia con il corpo e, per certi versi, un danzatore o una danzatrice può essere dunque definito come colui o colei che profetizza con il corpo. Come ha affermato la ballerina Bronislava Nižinskaja, sottintendendo l’aspetto dell’empatia insita nel fare Arte che ritroviamo anche nell’arte del proferire l’oracolo, “L’arte e la danza sono in grado di predire il futuro. Sono come l’intuizione”.

Nelle Yogini Danze Rituali non c’è estasi o trance, ma solo un leggero stato modificato di coscienza attivato dal lavoro sul corpo che rilascia tensioni e inibizioni. Nella danza c’è sempre una certa alterazione della coscienza perché, per muoversi, le tensioni devono essere sciolte. Aprire il corpo, allargare le braccia, muovere le gambe, spostare il peso, accettare di ‘muoversi’ da dove ci si trova, porta sempre in sé l’accettazione del rilascio. Yogini Danze Rituali ci invita ad aprirci ad una dimensione più sensibile, anche grazie al metodo di lavorare con le immagini delle carte oracolari e trovando, dopo la danza, la risposta nell’oracolo. La risposta dell’oracolo nel contesto della danza, indica con quale tipo di ‘energia’ ho a che fare, quali sono le potenzialità di una data situazione. Nelle Yogini Danze Rituali ci confrontiamo sempre con le nostre possibilità, quasi mai con le nostre verità. In definitiva, non si tratta tanto di ottenere risposte quanto di porre domande. E’ la giusta domanda che accorcia le distanze tra i mondi ad invitare l’oracolo ad attraversare la soglia del mistero, svelandoci la risposta.

Durante la danza con l’oracolo permettiamo al corpo di porre domande e trovare risposte profonde che non possono essere proferite attraverso le parole, o per meglio dire che le domande e le risposte del corpo non devono necessariamente essere dette a parole. Esse sono adagiate nelle profondità delle nostre ossa, dei nostri muscoli e della nostra pelle. Emergono nel modo in cui sperimentiamo il nostro corpo. Le domande e le risposte, dopo una sessione di Yogini Danze Rituali, sono mostrate dallo stesso corpo danzante. Esse sono visibili a noi e agli altri per come, dopo la danza che ha ritualizzato l’esistenza, trasportiamo il nostro corpo nel mondo.

La danza e l’oracolo sono un dialogo con noi stessi, con gli altri e con gli eventi della vita. E i segni e i simboli delle carte nelle Yogini of Hirapur Oracle sono guide importanti. Sia la danza che l’oracolo ci riportano al nostro corpo quale principale protagonista dell’esperienze  sensoriale.

Il corpo in quanto insieme complesso di intellegenze e linguaggi e’ la sede dell’esperienza di diversi e altri piani dell’esistenza e ci puo’ condurre a fare qualunque cosa si sia immaginata. Con la danza e l’oracolo questi diversi piani possono essere attraversati. Essi  ci  guidano a comprendere e a partecipare delle ragioni che sottostanno all’esistenza.

Per Concludere torniamo alla tradizione Tantra Shakta a cui appartengono le Yogini.

Tantra puó essere tradotto come intreccio, Shakta è il potere dell’energia manifestatasi nella vita.

Non trovo migliore via se non nell’ essere guidata e ‘curata’ dalle Yogini tessendo il potere dell’esistenza attraverso l’oracolo e la danza che le stesse Yogini mi hanno ispirato.

Steps in the evolution of a project of Yogini, Dance, Ritual and Oracle

It is my love and deep connection with Orissa and its culture that inspired me to create Yogini Ritual Dance and the art work Yogini of Hirapur Oracle.

In the early nineties I went to Orissa to learn Odissi dance and I lived in Bhubaneswar for several months. After this first residence, I lived in Orissa many other times involving myself not only in Odissi dance but also in other cultural aspects among which the study of the sculptures of dancing women. It was for this reason that, between 1999 and 2000, I visited for the first time the Yogini temple at Hirapur in Orissa, where I came back many other times during my research.

In one of these residences, I was looking for the right subject for my new book when a very strong artistic inspiration showered over me: to write about the Yogini, in particular the Yogini temple of Hirapur and why not … to rebuild all the sculptures of the Yogini drawing them one by one. 

The call was so strong that I didn’t think it twice … anyway when the Yogini invite us to do something it is not possible at all to decline the invitation! So, I did it in a very inspired creative way.

While the results of the Yogini temples, history and meaning was published in the book “La danza segreta delle Yogini. Il tempio di Hirapur” (Venexia, Rome 2014), the artistic inspiration to rebuild the broken sculptures of the Yogini lead me to create an original artwork: the deck of oracle cards called Yogini of Hirapur Oracle composed by 64 cards of the Yogini and a card for Shiva Bhairava and one for the Katyayani. The deck includes a booklet in Italian and English language with the explanation of each oracle cards.

The artistic recreation was done in full respect of the tradition but, at the same time, in complete freedom to realize a very original artistic tool.

I never thought to do a visual art work! But, after having drawn 66 big paper (the original paper of the cards is A3+), I definitely feel to have gained an important experience in the field of visual art.

Soon after the publication, Yogini of Hirapur Oracle cards received the interest of many women from different part of the world. This is the reason why I always say that more than mine this is a project of the Yogini themselves!

The third phase of the Yogini research is the project Yogini Ritual Dance.

I will explain how Yogini, Dance, Ritual and Oracle come together in this project.

Who are the Yogini

Briefly we say that Yogini belong to the Shakta Tantra tradition. They can be considered goddesses, demigoddesses, Shaman women, ogresses. As Yakshini they are also spirits of nature … but also women in flash and bones.

They have a benevolent, wrathful or theriomorphic aspect.

These three aspects are depicted in the oracle cards Yogini of Hirapur Oracle as well as enacted during the Yogini Ritual Dance.

What is Yogini Ritual Dance

Yogini Ritual Dance can be defined as an approach to heal and to the self- knowledge through the artistic expression of dance. It is a journey through the body, the heart and the soul re-awakened by the signs and symbols of the oracle cards Yogini of Hirapur Oracle.

The main characteristics of this dance project are:

– the use of the Hasta Mudras according to the system of the classical dances of India for their aesthetics and narrative aspects, but also for their healing, and energetic aspects according to yoga;

– the artistic expressivity of the whole body and,

– the choral choreographic process in which all the participants are involved in the creation of the dance items.

– and the use of the oracle deck Yogini of Hirapur Oracle.

In a session of Yogini Ritual Dance choreographic creation and performance of the group are part of a ritualistic moment shared in the time and space of the workshop. Chorality is a really relevant aspect of the Yogini Ritual Dance.

The ritual, creative and transformative aspects of the Yogini Ritual Dance emerge, take shape and are shared in the intimate space and time of the dance workshop. In this way the participants are completely at their ease to open up and experience the ritual of change that dance brings with itself.

Dance has the power to transform, to renew and recreate. These aspects linked to the ritual process are the best way to mark a path, to flow in the depths of the meaning and to go towards a changing process.

Yogini Ritual Dance is basically a healing process through the art of dance and the oracle. We cannot say if it is the dance which leads to the oracle or the oracle which manifests the dance. The two moments work together, interchanging and interacting at the same time.

What is an Oracle

Oracle is an ancient ritual that belongs to all the ancient civilizations and is still practiced in many traditional culture.

I live in Kerala and I have had many times the opportunity to see oracles during some of the traditional artforms. But Kerala is just one of the several examples I can mention.

The forms of the oracular languages are closely linked to the culture that expresses them. Hence, the Yogini of Hirpur Oracle speaks a contemporary language. Although the Yogini of Hirapur Oracle was inspired by the temple of Hirapur, it detaches itself from it to become a contemporary oracle. The wisdom of the Yoginis comes back to light but in a new context.

Divination is a creative process in which ingenuity and power, the ability to do and the ability to feel enable us to communicate with the veiled processes of the universe.

Prophetesses or prophets, enchantress and magicians, sibyls, witches and sorceress, poetesses and poets  – but I would include all the arts –  fall into that category in which the art of divination, in its various forms and systems, has always announced itself to human beings.

How Yogini, Ritual, Dance and Oracle work together?

Dance makes poetry with the body and, in some ways, a dancer may be considered as someone who prophesies with the body. As the dancer Bronislava Nižinskaja, underlying the aspect of empathy embedded in making Art as well as in proffering the oracle, said “Art and dance are capable to predict the future. They are like intuition”.

In Yogini Ritual Dance there is no ecstasy or trance, but a slight modified state of consciousness is activated by the work on the body which releases tensions and inhibitions.  In dance there is always a certain alteration of consciousness because, in order to move, tensions must be released. Opening your body, spreading your arms, moving your legs, shifting your weight, accepting to ‘move’ from where you are, always implies  the acceptance to release.

Thanks to a method of work based on the images of the oracle cards and the response of the oracle after the dance, Yogini Ritual Dance invites us to open to a more sensitive dimension. The response of the oracle with dance points out what kind of ‘energy’ I am dealing with. In Yogini Ritual Dance we always engage with our possibilities, never with our truths. Ultimately, we have to say that it is not even so much getting answers but asking questions. It is the right question that bridges the gap between the worlds and invites the oracle to cross the threshold to reveal us the answer.

During the dance with the oracle, we allow the body to ask questions and find deep answers which cannot be proffered through words. The questions and answers of the body do not necessarily have to be said by words. They rest in the depths of our bones, our muscles and our skin. They emerge in the way we experience our body. The questions and answers after a Yogini Ritual Dance session are showed by the dancing body itself. They are visible to us and to others for how, after the dance which has ritualized the existence, we move our body into the world.

Dance and the oracle are a dialogue with ourselves, with others and with the events of life. And the signs and symbols of the cards in the Yogini of Hirapur Oracle are important guides.

Both Dance and Oracle bring us back to our body which is the most essential and fundamental actor of magic.

The body, being a complex synthesis of different intelligences and languages, is the place where we experience various levels of existence and may lead us to do anything we have imagined. By means of dance and the oracle these levels may be experienced and crossed. They lead us to an understanding of existence and to a deeper participation to it.

To conclude we go back to Tantra Shakta tradition to which the Yogini belong to.

Tantra can be translated as woven together, Shakta is the power of the manifested energy in life.

I have not found the best way to be guided and healed by the Yogini than to wave the power of the existence through the dance and the oracle which themselves have inspired.

I will always be grateful to the Yogini for their precious presence in my life.
